Moisés Pérez, co-founder, president and CEO of Alianza Dominicana, one of Northern Manhattan’s largest nonprofits, is negotiating with the city to hold onto his position after an investigation found that a company he briefly invested in and earned a small profit from several years ago had also loaned money to Alianza, according to sources. Two of the nonprofit’s board members have reportedly also been asked to resign. The company that Pérez invested in made loans to nonprofits.

Yager Esthetics on Ft. Washington Avenue and W. 165th Street is one business that is on the upswing, doubling in size in June and growing to 13 employees.
While it is difficult to measure with great accuracy how the Northern Manhattan economy is faring, two recent events provide different snapshots of how small shopkeepers are faring in difficult times.
Bloody footprints, one after another, are still smeared on the sidewalk in front of 238 Ft. Washington Ave. The gory prints are a fading reminder of what police say was a random argument in the early hours of July 21 that escalated into violence.

New date for Rodriguez ethics hearing: Wed., Aug. 4
A City Council hearing into City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez’ alleged aggressive “touching” of a staffer has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. on Wed., Aug. 4 at City Hall after a previous meeting date a week earlier was postponed with no official reason given.
Delivery bicycle drivers in Washington Heights and Inwood can pick up a free bike helmet Thu., Aug. 5 from 1 to 4 pm courtesy of New York City Business Solutions and the Department of Transportation. The helmets will be distributed at 672 W. 158th St.

It’s Northern Manhattan’s largest parcel of underdeveloped land, the swatch of East Inwood sandwiched between 10th Avenue and the Harlem River known as Sherman Creek, and it has long tantalized the community with its potential new uses.

The gym at P.S. 18 in the northeastern most corner of Inwood is barely a gym. There are no windows and two large columns are centered in the room.
“That’s the play space for over 800 kids. It’s the only play space, there’s not really an adjacent park and the play yard is an asphalt yard, and small to boot,” said Sarah Morgridge, chief of staff for City Council Member Robert Jackson.

At Hashi Sushi, it is all about the details.

“At least, with what I’ve seen, we’ve been typical” for a slow market, said Citi Habitats Senior Associate Salesperson Sandy Edry.
