MTA to continue inspecting 168th Street 1-train station after collapse at 181st Street stop While the MTA reported Monday that it will once again divert 1-train service this weekend after an inspection of the 168th Street station “revealed some areas of concern,” it did restore train service at all local stops except 181st Street, where a 30-foot section of ceiling collapsed Aug. 16. That station will continue to be served by shuttle bus service along St. Nicholas Avenue between W. 168th and W. 191st Streets. The 168th Street station will be closed again for inspection this weekend, from 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29 to 5 a.m., Mon. Aug. 31. For the duration, the MTA is recommending that customers use the A-train or the temporary shuttle bus between Dyckman and W. 137th Streets. The 168th Street station was inspected because it has similar design and construction as the 181st Street 1-train stop that had a partial collapse. According to the MTA: “the inspection revealed some areas of brickwork in the station’s vaulted segment that we felt prudent to stabilize until we can perform further inspection and evaluation. Additionally, NYC Transit maintenance workers were called in to stabilize areas of loose plaster, concrete and brick in the extension part of the northbound platform.” The Manhattan Times is the bilingual newspaper of Washington Heights and Inwood.
