Back to school on W. 181st Street

I love the smell of new notebooks and sharpened pencils. It reminds me of my youth and how excited I was to start the new school year and see my friends.

34th Precinct commanding officer is reassigned

The commanding officer of the 34th Police Precinct, Deputy Inspector José Navarro, has been reassigned by the NYPD, despite protests from community leaders and elected officials.


“Nutcracker” bill signed into law by Gov. Cuomo

New legislation sponsored by Sen. Espaillat has now been signed into law by Gov. Cuomo that cracks down on the selling of the “Nutcracker” drink, the sugary alcoholic beverage often sold out of barbershops in northern Manhattan.

This past Fri., Aug. 19th, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law a bill sponsored by State Senator Adriano Espaillat (D – Manhattan/Bronx) that would crack down on the selling of sugary, colorful, and strong alcoholic drinks, often known as the “nutcracker.”


Space Camp announced for Inwood

Jason Kendall, northern Manhattan’s resident astronomer, for his “Inwood Space Camp,” is looking for a few good space cadets to join him this month in a free adventure for astronauts between the ages of 10 and 18 at the New York Public Library’s Inwood Branch.


Community residents voice concern over parks safety

A meeting was held this past Mon., Aug. 15th to discuss parks safety with local residents and Parks Department officials.

Local community residents and elected officials gathered at I.S. 52 on Mon., Aug.15th  to discuss their safety concerns with officials from the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Police Department and Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez.


Recent rape in Inwood comes during upheaval for local law enforcement

Local Police Precinct 34 is in the middle of major changes to its leadership, as Deputy Inspector José Navarro has recently been reassigned, despite active protests from community leaders and elected officials.

An Inwood schoolteacher on her way to work early this past Friday morning was raped, allegedly by an off-duty police officer from the 33rd Police Precinct. A nearby resident was awakened by the noise and called 911, after which police officer arrived within minutes.
