Oscar Abreu has opened a new fine art gallery space on Broadway. “I started this gallery to provide answers to the same questions I asked myself as a young man,” he says. Much of Abreu’s paintings have an autobiographical cast. This painting is one, inadvertently, he says of his sister, who perished on Flight 587. “Your greatest memories are those that impacted you with [real] emotion.”

This time next year, Washington Heights might have its very own youth orchestra.

In speaking to local middle and high school students this past week, noted Dominican author Julia Alvarez took on the personality of “Tía Lola,” the protagonist of her young adult series. “Books were like tías and tíos—storytellers,” said Alvarez.

Story and photos by Marisol Rodríguez
In Washington Heights and the Bronx, when and where beauty, creative expression and art intersect can often be well outside the typical medium of an art gallery or museum. Instead, the creative impulse, and the artist’s resistance to abandonment and exclusion in urban communities, often manifest in the streets, in hidden, underground spaces, on walls, in alleys.

“The Act of Love,” the new comedic short film starring Michael Diaz and Rachel Strauss-Muñiz, which features the story of a warring pair of actors (who are also a couple) facing some very serious – and funny – truths as their own young son, also an actor, is offered an opportunity of a lifetime.
Local Washington Heights producer/writer/actor Michael Diaz, with director Rob Drake, wanted to tell the story of dysfunctional actors married to each other from his own dating experiences. Diaz explains, “The insecurity and competition can sometimes wreck the relationship.”
Co-star Rachel Strauss-Muñiz enjoyed playing an exaggerated character. “I think I am the complete opposite [of Summer]. She is deceiving, devilish. Playing these up in the film was a lot of fun!”
Tickets are now on sale at HBO NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL LATINO FILM FESTIVAL website. Log on to the new website for more information: nylatinofilm.com. You may also view “The Act of Love” trailer http://vimeo.com/27178813.
