November 7 – November 12

I cannot overstate how proud I am of Uptown for taking part in large numbers in the End to End March for the 99% on Monday, November 7th. For 7 hours and 11 miles we marched, chanted and sang all the way from Washington Heights to Wall Street. There we were; the young, the old, Black, Latino, White, Asian and everything in between. United, determined and empowered with the belief that America’s best days are still in front of her. Democracy is on the move.

Carolina Pichardo penned a poignant open letter to Rosemary Rosario as she faces the very distinct possibility of the long imprisonment of her son. Rosemary Rosario is the mother of one of the 12-year-old assault suspects arrested for throwing a shopping cart off of a fourth-story walkway earlier this month.

In a rousing ceremony at the White House, First Lady Michelle Obama bestowed a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award on the Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC). YPC was one of 12 organizations to be honored with the nation’s highest award for youth organizations. YPC’s founder and artistic director, Francisco J. Núñez, is a Washington Heights native.

We also ran another installment of the ultra popular column, An Uptown Portrait by journalist Amaris Castillo. If you missed the Washington Heights and Inwood Photography exhibit that took place at Word Up Books recently, check out the site for pictures of the reception. The exhibit features the work of Mike Fitelson, Art By Dj Boy, Emil Baez and Tony Creative.

We ended the week with my Op-Led on the tragic death of John Collado. The family and supporters of John Collado led a peaceful march to the 34th Precinct on November 5th to demand a thorough investigation into the incident. The family, the neighborhood and yes, John Collado, deserve that much.

As always, keep checking us out at www.uptowncollective.com
