May 9 – May 14

We began the week with a column that I penned on the topic of infidelity as discussed at my quintessentially Dominican barbershop. For the most part, the general consensus among the barbers and the clientele was that women by nature will eventually cheat on their mates so it was better to cheat before she does. In other words, pre-emptive cheating; cheat before getting cheated on. In my humble opinion, pre-emptive cheating like pre-emptive war is a recipe for a disaster but I was not going to voice my opinion and try to convert the convinced.

On Tuesday, May 10 Uptown, Latin Music and the world lost one of the greats. Dominican singer, Santiago Cerón, died from a heart attack at the age of 70. To hear Santiago sing was to hear the very essence of Son music, which is a precursor to Salsa and is a musical form that is popular throughout the world but especially in Latin America. Even though Santiago is no longer with us, his music and legacy will be around for an eternity. Santiago Cerón Lives!

Brand and retail store, Goliath NYC (175 East 105th Street), featured a video interview on their site with our good friend and founder of the Sound of Art (SOA), Leopold Vasquez. Congrats are also in order to Heights resident, Manny Perez, as the movie that he wrote and starred in, “La Soga,” in now on DVD and On Demand.

There is nothing in the world like an Uptown summer. With that said, what would an Uptown summer be without another new collection from the Peralta Project? The latest series of t-shirts is aptly named Hecho A Mano as they are screen printed by the man himself, making them a super limited edition. The Hecho A Mano shirts are currently only available online at theprojectshop.net and at Nostlygia (251 Dyckman Street – 212-304-0337).

As always, keep checking us out at www.uptowncollective.com
