June 27 – July 2

Did you know that the man behind the informative and insightful myinwood.net, Cole Thompson, has a new book out? That’s right. Co-written with Lisa Pulitzer (what a great last name for a writer), “Portrait of a Monster” is a hard-hitting look at the murders of Natalee Holloway and Stephany Flores Ramirez by the young and brash Dutchman Joran van der Sloot.

The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center is a living testament to the vision, depth and scope of man whose intelligence, determination and drive made him a giant among men. His larger than life presence can still be felt in the former Audubon Ballroom. When you enter this sacred space you can almost hear Malcolm telling it like it is, speaking truth to power resolutely and unapologetically, with the audience enraptured responding back, “make it plain Malcolm, make it plain.” The power of the place was captured in pictures and video by our 2 newest contributors, Jay Franco and Amanda Hiciano.

The good folks at Palo Vitality Tea are giving the Uptown Collective audience a chance to win tickets to see Rita Indiana at SOB’s on July 9. All you have to do is log onto the Palo Facebook page: Facebook.com/DRINKPALO and tell them “Why you Love Rita Indiana?” The best 8 answers will win tickets to the show!

The long wait is finally over. We now have a cinematic opus that does justice to our beloved Washington Heights. “GWB” is a film about our neighborhood that viscerally documents the drama, joys, highs and lows of this dynamic, diverse and vibrant community. With a cast that includes Rayniel Rufino, Antonio Ortiz, Luis Ramos, Raul Esparza, Alexandra Metz and Olga Merediz among many others, this movie aims to capture the sights, sounds, colors and energy of this often forgotten and misrepresented part of Manhattan.

As always, keep checking us out at www.uptowncollective.com
