July 4 – July 9

Its official, Vantage Residential has extended the use of Word Up (4157 Broadway) until the end of September. This is a big victory for our community and for book lovers. With that said, it is still up to us to patronize, support and use the space. So let’s keep up the good work and show that place some real love. Long live Word Up Books!

Our very own Briana E. Heard was on hand to capture Uptown’s celebration of New York’s historic vote for marriage equality held at Columbia University Medical Center on July 2nd. We also featured a vignette from Briana’s decidedly low maintenance 4th of July block bash.

You can now remove a Supper Club from the list of things missing from the Uptown Scene. That’s right; Chef Lester Almanzar Paiewonsky decided to create the Upper Club to fill that gaping void. Lester grew up in Santiago, DR, basically in a kitchen, helping his mom run a catering business from the back of the house. That early foundation led to a life long love of food and cooking. Mr. Paiewonsky studied the culinary arts in Barcelona, Spain and from there was off to London to get some hands on training in various restaurants including Viajante, which has 1 Michelin Star, under Nuno Mendes. It was the thriving Supper Club scene in London that inspired Lester to start one here. Find out more at http://upperclub.posterous.com/

We also featured a multimedia retrospective of this year’s Uptown Arts Stroll. It was an honor to be an official partner of the biggest Uptown Arts Stroll ever. Thanks go out to NOMAA, the Manhattan Times, the Bago Bunch and the People’s Theatre Project.

We ended the week with another installment of the popular SOUL (Seasonal, Organic, Unprocessed and Local) food series penned by our wellness contributor, Eileen Z. Fuentes. This time around, the subject is berries, which are delicious, nutritious and are abundant as they are in season right now.

As always, keep checking us out at www.uptowncollective.com
