July 25 – July 30
Did you know that what has been dubbed as street basketball’s ‘game of the decade’ took place in our very own Dyckman Park (Monsignor Kett Playground) recently? The Dyckman League has become the biggest and most important basketball tournament in the city and that is evident by the massive crowds that show up there on a regular basis.
Much love goes out to Dominican-American superwoman, Madelyn Rodriguez for inaugurating our A Night Uptown column. Madelyn is an on-air personality and reporter for the show Acceso Total that airs on Telemundo 47 New York as well as for the national and international channel MUN2. She also serves as a talent for Univision Radio in New York, which includes the radio stations X96.3FM, WADO 1280AM, and 92.7FM La Que Buena.
I had the distinct privilege, a few weeks ago, of witnessing the incomparable Flaco Navajo do his thing at Apt 78. I stood there mesmerized, mouth agape as Flaco Navajo belted out pitch-perfect renditions of Salsa classic after Salsa classic. Echoes of Hector Lavoe, Ismael Rivera, Oscar De Leon and Ruben Blades among many others serenaded those fortunate enough to be in attendance that evening. Flaco’s music is an intoxicating mélange of Salsa, Spoken Word and Nuyorican Soul.
We also posted an interesting Q&A with Rashaad Ernesto Green, who is a 2011 Uptown Arts Stroll Honoree and the director of the forthcoming movie, Gun Hill Road. Gun Hill Road opens August 5 in NYC at the Angelika Film Center on Houston, AMC Empire 25 on 42nd St., and AMC Bay Plaza in the Bronx.
The New York International Latino Film Festival has announced the dates for the World Premiere of GWB. The dates are as follows: Friday, August 19th at 10:30pm and Saturday, August 20th at 9:30pm. Both showings will take place at AMC Empire 25 (Times Square/234 West 42nd St.). As always, keep checking us out at www.uptowncollective.com.
