December 19 – December 24
We began the week with a recap of the intimate cocktail party held to honor Emily Bustamante aka Emily B of the hit reality show Love and Hip-Hop put together by Pynk Magazine, Alisa Maria Collections and OR-G Liqueur. In addition to being a bonafide reality TV star, Emily Bustamante is one of the most respected and sought after fashion stylists in the entertainment business and has been for some time now. The icing on the cake is that Emily is also an Uptown girl. Hailing originally from the Heights, Emily still has family in the neighborhood and visits often.
The week also saw another installment of the popular Uptown Artist column featuring Harlem native Marthalicia Matarrita. Marthalicia shared with the Uptown Collective her harrowing tales of growing up in a dysfunctional household in Harlem and how art saved her from an otherwise terrible fate. Marthalicia’s artwork virtually pulsates with urgency, depth and meaning.
Speaking of art, the veritable institution that is El Museo del Barrio is celebrating its sixth biennial of the most innovative, cutting-edge art created by Latino, Caribbean, and Latin American artists currently working in the greater New York area. The exhibit ends January 8th so make sure you patronize this important museum. For more info, check out: http://www.elmuseo.org/
Our wellness contributor, Eileen Z. Fuentes, penned a poignant missive entitled It Takes a Village To Heal that dealt with the impact her wellness series for cancer survivors at Columbia University Medical Center had on the impressionable students at the City College Academy of Professional Preparation program. Not only was Eileen asked to serve as an advisor for their semester projects but the students also held a fundraiser to help out Eileen’s foundation Speach (Self Promotion Empowerment Advocacy & Care Haven).
In addition, we debuted our year-end Uptown 2011 Movers and Shakers series highlighting the work of local folks having a career-defining year. The first was about La Sala 78 and Apt 78 owner Jose Morales written by Gloria Pazmiño. The second one was about Gloria Pazmiño and was written by the one and only Mike Fitelson. By the way, check out our pictures of the “In The Wood” web series screening held at Piper’s Kilt recently.
