August 22 – August 27

Hey Uptown, I write this recap from the picturesque country of the Dominican Republic. While Hurricane Irene hit most of you once, I actually met her a few days earlier in the DR. Luckily for me and the rest of the island, it was mostly rain and a pretty scary cross-country trip while she was in full swing. Then as I was preparing to return to NYC, our flight was cancelled and our flight back was delayed for a full week. I guess there are worse places to be stranded in.

Since this year’s Post-DR Parade festivities didn’t go down as usual on the streets of Washington Heights due to the rain, we thought it was only right that we share some of last year’s pictures by the one and only Briana E. Heard.

While we are on the topic of the Dominican Republic, check out the site for some more amazing images from the New York International Latino Film Festival’s (NYILFF) incredible Dominican night taken by the man of the hour, Dj Boy. Both of the movies featured that night, La Hija Natural and Crush, are ones to watch out for. This is by far the best NYILFF ever and Uptown played a part with both GWB and Juan Bago’s Act of Love making strong showings.

We also took a second look at the must see photo exhibit, NYC Over and Under, highlighting the work of Jay Franco and a few other photographers. We cannot recommend this show enough, stop by the Rio Gallery (Penthouse -10 Fort Washington Ave) sometime before September 6th and take a gander.

We ended the week with a write up by Rainey Skates on the World Premiere of GWB the movie. The rain could not put a damper on the warm reception met by the film. The movie is quite remarkable and finally puts our neighborhood in the proper cinematic perspective.
