August 1 – August 6
Do you know what a Freegan is? No, it is not a curse word. According to Freegan.info, “Freegans are people who employ alternative strategies for living based on limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources. Perhaps the most notorious freegan strategy is what is commonly called urban foraging or dumpster diving.” With that said, the Huffington Post recently profiled Uptown freegan, Gio Andollo.
The New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF), which is the premier Urban Latino film event in the country is set to kick off on Monday, August 15th and Uptown has a few projects in the festival this year. First off, we have the feature length film “GWB” that will make its world premiere on Friday, August 19th at 10:30pm at the AMC Empire 25 (Times Square/234 West 42nd Street). Tickets to the premiere are going fast so check out our site for ticket info. Secondly, good friend of the UC, Juan Bago, has a short film “Act of Love” in the festival as well. Not to mention, a whole host of wonderful films, shorts and documentaries that will be shown during the NYILFF.
This week was also a great one for the Uptown arts scene. M. Tony Peralta’s thought-provoking “Complejo” exhibit opened at the NoMAA Gallery (178 Bennett Avenue) on Thursday, August 4th and Jay Franco’s “NYC Over & Under” photo exhibit reception took place at the Rio Gallery (10 Fort Washington Ave) on Saturday, August 6th. The arts are alive and thriving Uptown.
The new film, Gun Hill Road, by 2011 Uptown Arts Stroll honoree Rashaad Ernesto Green was released this past weekend and tickets have been selling at a brisk pace. In addition, we ran a video Q&A with local music producer Frankie P. You will be hearing a lot from this enterprising young mover and shaker in the near future.
As always, keep checking us out at www.uptowncollective.com.
