The sudden snowfall on Sat., Oct. 29th did little to dampen the festive mood on Sherman Avenue. The Democratic political club, the Northern Manhattan Democrats for Change (NMDC), celebrated the opening of their new headquarters, located at 210 Sherman Avenue. Despite the unprecedented snow and the occasionally hazardous conditions it presented, the ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception drew a large crowd with well over 150 people in attendance.
“I was thrilled that so many people would come out to support us,” said NMDC’s Wendy Garcia, as she greeted well-wishers.
NMDC, which has been a substantial influence in Northern Manhattan politics, will now have greater space within which to operate than their previous locale, at 612 West 178th Street.
“We are a growing organization, and needed a bigger place, and so here we are,” said Glennis Gomez, co-president of NMDC.
The ceremony was attended by a number of elected officials, including New York State Senator Adriano Espaillat, who also was one of the club’s co-founders.
Also in attendance were New York City Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez and New York City Comptroller John Liu.
“This is a club that means a great deal to me. This club has made an incredible impact in New York City,” said Liu. “When I was running for Comptroller there wasn't any other club that did as much for me as the Northern Manhattan Democrats for Change.”
The occasion also served as a celebration of the many community leaders within the club, including past and current District Leaders Maria Morillo, Maria Luna, Mayra Linares, Manny de Los Santos, Marisol Alcantara and Jamaal Nelson.
“There are people who say that they feel as though they don’t deserve certain awards, but I won’t say that today,” Morillo joked. “I believe I worked really hard for this and I deserve the award.”
“I came to this club when I was 14 years old. I am honored to receive this award after my 15 years of my service to this community and this club,” said Manny de Los Santos.
Mark Levine, a Democrat who ran against Sen. Espaillat in 2010, reminded the club of the importance of a unified Democratic Party.
“The Democratic Party needs to stick together; if we fight amongst ourselves, we will lose. We must not forget what our main priority is,” said Levine. “We are going to re-elect President Barack Obama.”
But it was not all words, as those too young to understand all the speeches focused on far more pressing issues: getting their faces painted on Halloween weekend.

La repentina nevada el sábado, 29 de octubre hizo muy poco para opacar el sentimiento festivo en la Avenida Sherman. El club político demócrata, Demócratas por el Cambio del Norte de Manhattan (NMDC, por sus siglas en inglés), celebró la apertura de sus nuevas oficinas centrales, localizadas en el 210 de la Avenida Sherman. A pesar de la nevada sin precedentes y las condiciones ocasionalmente peligrosas que presentó, la ceremonia de corte de cinta y recepción atrajo más de 150 personas.
“Yo estaba emocionada de que tantas personas vinieran a apoyarnos”, dijo Wendy García, de NMDC, mientras saludaba a los asistentes.
NMDC, el cual ha sido una influencia substancial en la política del Norte de Manhattan, ahora tendrá un espacio más grande desde donde operar que su previo local en el 612 de la Calle 178.
“Somos una organización en crecimiento, y necesitábamos un lugar más grande, y aquí estamos”, dijo Glennis Gómez, co-presidente de NMDC.
A la ceremonia asistieron un número de oficiales electos, incluyendo el Senador Adriano Espaillat, quien también fue uno de los cofundadores del club.
También estaba el Concejal Ydanis Rodríguez y el Contralor de la ciudad John Liu.
“Este es un club que significa mucho para mi. Este club ha hecho un increíble impacto en la ciudad de Nueva York”, dijo Liu. “Cuando estaba postulándome para Contralor no hubo ningún otro club que hiciera tanto por mi como Demócratas por el Cambio del Norte de Manhattan”.
La ocasión también sirvió como celebración para los muchos líderes comunales dentro del club, incluyendo los pasados y actuales Líderes de Distrito María Morillo, María Luna, Mayra Linares, Manny de los Santos, Marisol Alcántara y Jamaal Nelson.
“Hay personas que dicen que sienten como si no merecieran ciertos premios, pero no voy a decir eso hoy”, bromeo Morillo. “Pienso que trabajé arduamente para esto y me merezco el premio”.
“Yo vine a este club cuando tenía 14 años de edad. Estoy honrado de recibir este premio luego de mis 15 años de servicio a esta comunidad y a este club”, dijo Manny de los Santos.
Mark Levine, demócrata que corrió contra el Senador Espaillat en el 2010, le recordó al club de la importancia de un Partido Demócrata unido.
“El Partido Demócrata necesita mantenerse unido; si luchamos entre nosotros mismos, perderemos. No debemos olvidar cual es nuestra principal prioridad”, dijo Levine. “Nosotros vamos a reelegir al presidente Barack Obama”.
Pero no fueron sólo palabras, mientras aquellos demasiados jóvenes para entender todos los discursos se enfocaron en asuntos más apremiantes: pintarse sus caritas en el fin de semana del Día de las Brujas.
