The Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon returns this Sun., Oct. 2nd for its 27th year of jousting, juggling, blacksmiths, and historical costumes.
“Rub the rust off thy armor, iron thy chain mail, gird thy loins and polish up on ye chivalry,” is the call to arms.
Just watch out for the horses.
The 27th Annual Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon Park is coming this Sunday, Oct. 2nd, from 11:30 am – 6 pm.
As sponsored by the City of New York Parks and Recreation and the Washington Heights and Inwood Development Corporation (WHICH), the Medieval Festival transforms the area around the Cloisters Museum in Fort Tryon Park into a medieval market village where knights in armor, jugglers, jesters, magicians, musicians, storytellers, and puppeteers perform. Over 40,000 people on average attend the festival, and come to witness craftsmen (and women) such as blacksmiths, manuscript illuminators, pottery decorators, wood carvers and other artisans demonstrate their crafts. Performers and fairgoers dress in historical costumes, and the afternoon culminates with a jousting event between knights on horseback.
New events this year include an Austrian Village Forge where blacksmiths will hammer out swords and armour throughout the today, and a torchblower will hand-craft glass beads. Also new this year is the tale of Robin Hood as experience in a sword-to-sword combat in a classical tale of good triumphing over evil. Afterwards, children can meet Robin Hood, Maid Marion, and all of their friends.
Visitors are encouraged to take public transportation as there is no public parking at the festival. Either the “A” train to the 190th Street Station or the M4 bus will take you directly to the park entrance.
