As we cast a glance back at the year that was, we also begin to anticipate all that is to come for ourselves, our family and friends and our community in the new year.

The following is a selected compilation of the expectations, aspirations and wishes of some local students at George Washington High School for 2012.

There is a garden in my community that needs water, sun and air. I want this garden in our community on Riverside Drive to be complete in the New Year because we would be one step closer to a healthier environment.  This is important, not just for us, but for the whole world because that is what is best for the earth.  If we continue to pollute the world, our future will suffer for the mistakes we made in the past and mistakes we are making now. Making the environment healthier with a community garden would be the best wish for our future.

My wish for the New Year is a better, stronger economy. These days people worry day to day about how much money they have available in the bank or in their pocket. Money causes people to become anxious, to steal, and be depressed. Money corrupts people and causes them to go through calamity. Economic worries have a negative effect on people. It’s sad that this is what money can do but it’s what happens to many people. Without these worries parents, children, adults, etc. can be closer to bliss and further away from feeling gloomy and melancholy.

This is my wish for the New Year.

One wish I have for my community is for the violence to stop. Sometimes, I am scared to walk down the streets. All the drugs being sold to teenagers should disappear. It is getting out of control.  Before, people were not afraid to hang out on the streets but now everyone stays home. The lives of innocent teenagers flash before they even blink, due to the violence caused by gang members. All I wish is for this to stop and for life to go back to the way it was before when everyone knew each other, loved each other, and cared for each other like one big family. Why can’t it be like that again?

As a senior in high school, I look back on the years that have passed and realize that I haven't done much in my school. From time to time I've complained about the teachers, classes, and lack of extracurricular activities, without trying to understand my teachers, learn in classes, or try to start a club I would like. Now, looking back, I regret not being involved in trying to make my school better.

My wish for 2012 is for students to not make the same mistake I made. Teachers are always willing to help us make things better for us, so why not take that opportunity? st kids complain that school is boring, but that's all they do-complain. They don't try to change what they want to change even though they can. It'll be to their advantage and to future kids if they did. They are going to be in school for a while, so why not make it into something meaningful. My wish for the New Year is for students to make a difference.

My wish to my community is to be better.

Let us not be diverse, let us come together.

Let us not be strangers and let us become friends.

Let violence, drugs, and crime come to an end.

Let us create better ways,

and better days,

for our kids of tomorrow.

Let them not witness pain, poverty, and sorrow.

Let’s give them a future that is bright.

Let us not be ignorant, trapped by darkness, let us bring light.

Let’s create better jobs for our parents,

better schools for our kids.

Crimes, discrimination, poverty, let all of that be forbidden.

My wish to my community is to be better for our children’s future.

If not they would grow up to be foul and corrupt.

My wish for my community is to be better.

I wish to be known in the community and the school I’m currently in. I wish for teenagers who deserve recognition do gain it and would like to see teens rewarded as leaders in their community. This is my wish for the New Year.

One wish for the country is less homelessness. There should be a project where we can build houses for homeless people. Even though there are shelters and halfway houses available, some are too proud to accept help. It breaks your heart to think that people may not have a warm place to sleep or warm food for their bellies. My wish is for less homeless people in our country.

I wish for our community to be much cleaner and for our country to be more peaceful in the New Year.
