A new bill introduced in Albany on Sat., June 18 that would allow livery cars to pick up passengers in the street and the city to sell more yellow cab medallions – generating over a billion dollars in revenue – is likely to pass both chambers this week, say inside sources.
The Manhattan Times received the following statement from Livery Base Owners Inc. President Pedro Heredia and spokeswoman Cira Angeles:
“Addressing a 40-year need, the state Legislature is poised to pass a bill that would protect an industry of tens of thousands of workers, legalize a practice of street hails that millions rely on every day in the outer boroughs, and maintain thousands of jobs.
“Livery base owners and drivers across the five boroughs overwhelmingly support the plan and acknowledge the hard work and deliberation that has gone into this final proposal by the state Legislature.
“We thank the mayor, City Council members, and the state Legislature for acknowledging the reality of the situation on the street and proposing a bill that benefits the livery industry, the city, and its 8 million residents.”

Enfocándose en una necesidad de los últimos 40 años, la legislatura estatal esta lista a pasar una legislación para proteger a decenas de miles de trabajadores, legalizando la práctica de recoger pasajeros en la calle. De esta práctica dependen diariamente millones de vecinos que residen en los condados y la industria crea miles de empleos.
