Move over, Martha.

Forget needing a pasture and a farm in Connecticut from which to select your fowl for the Thanksgiving feast.

Just a few steps from the rumble of the elevated 1 train’s 207th Street stop, you’ll find Pedro Enrique, who hails from the large city of Santiago, in the Dominican Republic. Enrique has been in the live poultry business for 13 years, and he is certain that you will find the least expensive, thoroughly delicious and outfitted fowl and poultry in all of northern Manhattan, if not all the city itself.

“We are very hygienic, and also inexpensive,” says Enrique, who doesn’t deny that the workers also pride themselves also on their charismatic and engaging ways.

“It’s why our Washington Heights residents prefer to do business with us,” says Enrique with a grin.

Enrique’s Vivero Primo #2, located at 148 Post Avenue is a fresh poultry market that provides a great number of choices. Vivero Primo #2, has, on a regular basis, twelve different domestic birds those including white hens, quails and pigeons. Clients also have the option to special-order other kinds of game.

“Customers like the choice, the variety. [And] I believe a clean bird is the key thing our customers look for when buying a bird from us,” says Alfredo Rodriguez, an employee at market. Keeping and maintaining a clean, orderly workplace, despite the challenges presented, is the workers’ everyday goal.

Not surprisingly, with Thanksgiving days away, the workers are being kept busy by both repeat customers and curious new-comers alike. Enrique is quick to recommend that those in the market purchase turkeys from a live poultry market.

“When a customer buys a turkey from a poultry market, he or she knows that the meat is fresh. When you buy turkey from a supermarket, it is typically frozen. There is no knowledge as to how long the turkey has been in storage,” says Enrique.

And many local customers seem inclined to agree.

Vivero Primo #2 is filled with customers choosing their selected bird, while tickets are filled one after another.

“A customer chooses his or her turkey. We weigh the turkey, and we write up a ticket for them. Then we process the turkey, we clean them and we either cut the meat into pieces or leave them whole,” explains Rodriguez.

“There is nothing more pleasing than knowing where your food comes from. You enjoy your food better for some reason with this thought,” says Ramona Santos, a Washington Heights resident, who was selecting her own turkey.

The price of the Vivero Primo #2’s selection of Thanksgiving turkeys ranges anywhere from fifteen to twenty five dollars, depending on their weight, whereas supermarkets sell turkeys for thirty dollars and above.

“Our turkeys are very healthy and ready to eat,” says Enrique. “I sell thousands of turkeys in four days,” referring to the time period from Sunday to Wednesday before the holiday. “Thanksgiving is our busiest time of our year, the second being Christmas week,” he continued.

Along with fowl, Vivero Primo# 2 carries various choices of eggs and other poultry products.

Vivero Primo #2 is located on 148 Post Avenue, just off 10th Avenue.

The phone numbers are 646.796.9477 and 646.796.0450.

In addition to cash, Vivero Primo #2 also accepts E.B.T. cards and credit cards.
