Manhattan Impromptus, A Free Concert

With its proliferation and frequent juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated ideas, the music of Brian Schober’s Manhattan Impromptus, encapsulates many of the wide-ranging concepts that find their way into the daily hustle and bustle life of a New Yorker.

In a free concert on Nov. 13th presented by Music of Our Savior’s Atonement (MOSA), pianist Stephen Gosling is set to play Schober’s dynamic Manhattan Impromptu that pays homage to Colon Nancarrow, Frédéric Chopin, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Central Park. As Schober put it, “Impromptu… captures much of the quality of life and experience in New York City where many seemingly incongruous elements are often thrown together with little, if any, foresight and are made to exist together.” Moving from highly rhythmic and intense segments to slow moving, static melody and simple harmonic accompaniment, Schober has created the harmonious dissonance he wanted to build.

Audio samples from Stephen Gosling's 2005 recording of Manhattan Impromptus (Capstone Records) are available at iTunes, Rhapsody, and eMusic.

This free event will be held on Sun., Nov. 13th at the Cornerstone Center at Our Saviour’s Atonement Lutheran Church on 178th Bennett Ave, one block west of Broadway at 189th Street.  For more information call 212.923.5757, Monday through Friday, from 10 am – 2 pm.

The box office will open one hour prior to the performance.

Items Lost, and not yet Found

Here at the Inwood Center 5030 Broadway at 214th Street, ghouls, ghosts, goblins, and batterina’s roamed our corridors in search of sweet indulgences this past Fri., Oct. 25th.

After the last poster came down, the last vampire was treated, and the last spider-web was swept up, we found some valuable possessions we hope will be claimed.

If any heroes out there had their portraits taken at the Manhattan Times/The Bronx Free Press headquarters and did not receive them, we have them for you!

Among them are mimes, Spidermen, bumblebees, Miss America’s, lions, tigers, trolls, and vampires, to name a few.

Also, there was a pink winter jacket left behind, which we have kept for safe-keeping.

If you or someone you know came to the “Hero-Fest” last Friday and lost a girl’s pink winter jacket, please contact us.

To claim your little monster’s Halloween photo or pink winter jacket, call us 212.569.5800 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
