The story is written in the layers of oil on the canvas: the effervescent colors sometimes meld together, sometimes hold their individuality.

Deep blue and circular motion suggests the sea. Above, vibrant red and orange bleed into the sea, suggesting sky. The painting is a triptych – three canvases aligned and portraying one unified picture.

Artist Viviana Puello said she bases all of her work on her personality, and that each painting is representative of her.

The painting, “Gypsy Heart,” is about the artist’s story – in both title and depiction. The title and image may not seem connected at first glance, but delve deeper and it is clear they are intertwined inseparably.

Puello, who considers herself a gypsy, grew up near the beach in Colombia and said she likes to use colors that remind her of the water and the sunset.

At age 19 Puello moved to the United States from Colombia, and has kept moving ever since. Puello said this has made her very good at adapting to other cultures and other places.

However, some places appear to have called her back. Puello has moved in and out of Washington Heights since 1987.

On Sat., Aug. 7, Puello will hold the opening of her exhibits, “Voces del Alma” and “Soy Caribe,” in her Washington Heights studio.

From there, the series will travel to Florence, Italy, where it will be displayed as part of “A New Day,” in the Auditorium Al Duomo. The international exhibition will showcase the work of artists who are part of the Vivid Arts Network, an organization founded by Puello to “explore the many dimensions of the human soul,” and to benefit victims of sexual trafficking. Ten percent of the proceeds from Puello’s Washington Heights exhibit will go to ECPAT International.

Puello’s opening will be held Sat., Aug. 7 from 3 to 9pm, at her studio at 601 W. 174th St., 4C. The exhibit can be viewed for the next month by appointment, from 2 to 8pm. To make an appointment, contact Viviana Puello at 347-277-2065.
