Schneiderman

With a vast Democratic advantage among Northern Manhattan voters, most local candidates for state office who won the September Democratic Primary could safely print business cards without waiting for the Nov. 2 General Election.

But the race for attorney general, featuring Northern Manhattan state Senator Eric Schneiderman, wasn’t decided until Tuesday night, when Schneiderman won with 55 percent of the vote over Republican Dan Donovan.

Top of the ticket races for U.S. Senate, governor and comptroller all went to Democrats.

But New York State was not immune to the tidal wave of Republican wins that swept across the country, including a takeover of the House of Representatives. Three state Senate races are too close to call, imperiling the Democrats’ slim majority in the chamber.

Both ballot measures asked of New York City voters passed by wide margins. One will reduce the number of signatures a candidate needs to get on the ballot, require independent groups to disclose campaign contributions and increase fines for conflicts of interest. The other measure, for the third time in 17 years, reaffirms voters’ desire to hold elected officials to two, four-year terms.

In the sideshow race for most popular celebrity governor wannabe, Jimmy McMillan of the Rent is 2 Damn High Party beat Kristin Davis of the Anti-Prohibition Party 39,850 to 22,775. To compare, winner Andrew Cuomo won with 2,532,447 votes.

All unofficial results are from the Web site of NY1.
