With trains thundering overhead, officials held a press conference Thu., Sep. 2 at the dilapidated Dyckman Street 1-train station to announce what amounts to a $60 million complete renovation of the 104-year-old station and an additional $33 million for five stations further north on the line.
“The community as a whole has advocated for this for a long time,” said Assembly Member Adriano Espaillat, who helped secure funding for the project as part of the state bailout money for the MTA.
Construction work won’t begin on the landmarked IRT station until Sep. 18, but the work site is already set up, with new barriers eliminating dozens of parking spaces along steep Ft. George Hill.
Free shuttle buses will provide service for 1-train riders going northbound from September 2010 to June 2011 and for southbound passengers from July 2011 to August 2012.
