Mother Cabrini would have been proud of these alumnae.

On Oct. 14 Mother Cabrini High School will honor five of its graduates and a religious order as embodiments of the work of Frances Xavier Cabrini, the patron saint of immigrants and orphans, and the first American beatified.

Those honored include: Marcelle Caccioppoli ’52; Dr. Elsa Gomez ’56; Yvonne Latty ’80; Ms. Jeanette A. Michael, Esq. ’68; Dr. Patricia Redden ’58; and the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, the Catholic religious order that built the school.

Caccioppoli is a retired MCHS physical education teacher and counselor who organized the Cabrini Scholars Program; she also served on the school’s Board of Advisors.

Latty is a professor and the director of two graduate concentrations at New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and at the Urban Journalism Workshop, and is author of two critically acclaimed books about veterans’ lives and an award-winning play.

Michael, who passed away in June from cancer, used her MCHS education to become an attorney, first earning two degrees to help open some doors: a bachelor’s degree from Manhattanville College and a juris doctor degree from The George Washington University (GWU). In 2002, Ms. Michael had been diagnosed with breast cancer, and spoke out in the media about living with cancer.

Redden is Chair of the Chemistry Department at St. Peter’s College in Jersey City. In the 1950s, however, when she graduated from MCHS, a career in science (for women) was unheard-of. That did not stop her from earning a Ph.D. and building a career in chemistry.

The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart are being recognized as a religious order and for their service to the school.
