NYPL keeps Kids cool
If it’s just TOO unbearably hot to be outside, you can always drop by your local public library. On July 28, bring your 5- to12-year-olds to the Inwood library, at 4790 Broadway (at Dyckman St.), where the librarian will read a few of her favorite stories. The Fort Washington Branch is hosting free board games for all ages and skill levels on Mondays at 3pm, through August. Visit http://www.nypl.org for more information on heat-busting events at this and other NYPL branches.
Outdoor Fun
If you don’t mind the heat, there are plenty of outdoor activities in our area this week.
On Monday and Wednesday from 11 am to 1 pm through August 6, get your hands a little dirty while you and your children plant a Colonial-style garden. During this FREE Parks Department program, you can help your kids create their own terrarium, press flowers and even design a garden journal. Grown-ups must be accompanied by their children at all times, and advanced registration is required, so call 212-923-8008 to reserve a spot. The garden is located at the Morris-Jumel Mansion, 65 Jumel Terrace.
Family Evenings Out
Night owls can share a guided tour of the Manhattan night sky by joining the Inwood Astronomy Club in its weekly star-gazing adventure. The program is FREE and meets every Saturday through December, at the corner of Payson Avenue and Beak Street, in Inwood Hill Park, from 8:30pm until 10 pm.
Street Play
Let your kids play in the street! Every Saturday, between 9 am and 5 pm, they can hang out with their buddies on Post Avenue between Academy and W. 204th Streets. The streets are closed off, and there are plenty of wholesome activities to keep them happy.
Free Family Movies
New York Restoration Project invites your family to join them at Swindler Cove Park (Dyckman Street and Harlem River Drive) for popcorn and a movie at dusk on Thursday, July 29. They’re showing a nature feature from the new LIFE series, so it will be age-appropriate for any kid and interesting to all.
