Shakespeare, critters and lighthouses

by Tammy McKillip

I hope you have all made the very most of summertime and are looking forward to the cooler weather, fall leaves and shorter days. Now is a good time to start prepping your children for the new bedtime routine. Put them to bed a few minutes earlier each night between now and Sep. 8 so that they won't be tired on their first day back to school. If you move the bedtime up in small increments, they are less likely to put up a fuss.

Bring the family to Inwood Hill Park on Sun., Sep. 5 to enjoy the Curious Frog Theatre Company's unique adaptation of "A Midsummer Night's Dream: The Scavengers." There's something for just about everyone in this version of Shakespeare's classic play, so pack a blanket, a snack and bring the kids along. The show begins at 4pm and is recommended for all ages. Call 646-450-2878 or visit www.curiousfrog.org for more information. The program is completely FREE!(We LOVE that!)

On Thu., Sep. 9, take a walk on the wild side, as you and your family enjoy a Nature at Night Walk through Inwood Hill Park with Parks naturalist, Mike Feller. You'll discover New York City parks' creatures of the night – a rare adventure for the whole family! The group will meet at 7:30pm in front of the Inwood Hill Nature Center, in Inwood Hill Park, W. 218th Street and Indian Hill Road. Just walk towards the salt marsh to find the center on your left. The program is FREE.

On Sat., Sep. 11, bring the kids to The Little Red Lighthouse for a first-hand exploration of the beloved storybook icon that still sits beside the great gray bridge. Climb to the top, and enjoy the spectacular view with your family. This FREE program will continue from 1 to 4pm the second Saturday of the month through October 9 at W. 181st Street and Lafayette Plaza. Call the Urban Rangers at 212-304-3401 for more information.
