On Tuesday afternoon, June 8, a brush fire in Fort Tryon Park near the intersection of Broadway and Sherman Avenue, took two fire units to put out. Engine 95 and ladder 36 responded to the scene, snaking up 10 lengths of hose (500 feet) to get uphill and ahead of the spreading flames.

Like many of the summer flare-ups, the fire was likely ignited by a child or homeless person, Engine 95 Captain Frank Occhiogrosso said. Fires in that stretch of the park are particularly challenging, he added, because it’s steep and full of poison ivy.

The blaze follows eight intentionally set fires in Northern Manhattan’s parks back in April, five of which were on the same day in Inwood Hill Park.
